Fatal Paragliding Crash in La Jolla

The victim of the paragliding accident was South Carolina resident Pamela Hargett

A paraglider is dead after a fatal gliding accident in La Jolla Saturday.

According to San Diego lifeguards, the female glider crashed into a cliff south of the Gliderport near 9776 La Jolla Farms Rd. around 12 p.m.

For unknown reasons, authorities said the glider – 52-year-old South Carolina resident Pamela Hargett -- lost control while paragliding along the Torrey Pines cliffs above Blacks Beach.

She crashed 150 to 200-feet from the top of the cliff, lifeguards said.

Hargett’s boyfriend who was also paragliding saw the collision and called 911.

Lifeguards, police and fire personnel gained access to the victim through a home near the crash site.

Helicopter rescue assistance was requested.

Lifeguards said the woman was unconscious and in critical condition at the scene.

At 1:15 p.m., the victim was rescued from the cliff and CPR was administered.

At 1:20 p.m., Hargett was pronounced dead.
