23-Year-Old Marine Arrested After Firing Shots Outside Bar

Police say Sy Schultheis allegedly fired shots at South Bay Lounge after being asked to leave

A Camp Pendleton Marine was arrested Friday night for allegedly firing shots outside a South Bay bar.

San Diego Police arrested 23-year-old active duty Marine, Sy Schultheis, who is accused of firing shots outside the South Bay Lounge located at 1671 Palm Avenue just after 2 a.m. Friday, according to SDPD Officer Frank Cali.

According to the bar's owner, Schultheis was asked to leave and then began arguing with the bar's staff.

When Schultheis eventually left a few minutes later the staff cleared the lounge and locked both doors. Shortly after that they heard a man banging on the front doors, police said.

Minutes later, sounds of gunfire were heard outside the bar and when the owner went to investigate the noise they saw Schultheis in the passenger seat of a 2011 black Chrysler sedan with paper plates, police said.

Schultheis reportedly shot one round at the owner and fled inside the vehicle, according to a media release.

The owner, who was left unhurt, checked the parking lot and discovered his car had been shot six times, Cali said.

Schultheis was later arrested at his home in the 2600 block of Desty Court in the South Bay at about 9:30 p.m., according to Cali.

Schultheis served in Afghanistan and was set to deploy again. He is now facing five counts including a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon and felony vandalism.

Camp Pendleton officials said they are cooperating with police.

"Incidents like these are few and far between," said a Camp Pendleton official, "when they happen the most important thing to do is to own up to our part accountable and stay with our core values."
