Padres Win Series Opener against Mets

Joey Luchessi Strikes Out Six

Rookie starter Joey Luchessi made a victorious return to the mound against the New York Mets Monday night. The lefty struck out six batters and allowed just two runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched. This was Luchessi’s first game back after spending some time in Triple A to help keep his rhythm during the All-Star break.

The Padres mustered up some offense in the fifth inning. Freddy Galvis got the Friars started with an RBI single to center field. That plated Christina Villanueva and tied the game at one run apiece.

Later that inning Manuel Margot pushed Galvis home with an RBI triple to center field and that gave San Diego a 2-1 lead.

The Padres held on for a 3-2 victory over the Metropolitans. They’ll look to seal the series on Tuesday July 24 at 4:10 p.m at Citi Field.
