Padres Win Again at Dodger Stadium

Friars guarantee at least a series split against 1st place Dodgers

In 2019 the Dodgers have only lost one series at home. That came back in April when they dropped two of three to the Brewers. The occasion also marked the only time this year the Los Angeles has lost back-to-back games at Dodger Stadium.

Until Saturday night.

The Padres beat L.A. 3-1 to secure at least a split of their 4-game series and hand the team with baseball's best record its second home losing "streak" of the season.

Rookie starter Chris Paddack tossed 5.2 shutout innings with six strikeouts and in the process showed his ability to pitch out of trouble. The Dodgers loaded the bases with one out in the 5th inning but Paddack struck out Kenta Maeda and got Joc Pederson to ground out to Eric Hosmer, eliciting an emphatic fist pump from Paddack.

The first run of the game came in the 7th inning when Hunter Renfroe belted his 27th home run of the season. Renfroe is tied with Pirates slugger Josh Bell for 4th in Major League Baseball in homers but was NOT invited to take part in the Home Run Derby during All-Star week in Cleveland.

In the 8th inning Manuel Margot had a rare power surge. Margot snuck his 4th homer of the year over the left field wall to put the Friars on top 3-0 and it turned out to be the game-winner.

Los Angeles got a run in the bottom half but they couldn't solve Kirby Yates. The All-Star closer tossed a scoreless 9th inning for his league-leading 29th save.

San Diego can hit the All-Star break with an even .500 record ... and an incredibly surprising series win in Chavez Ravine ... if Joey Lucchesi can top Ross Stripling on Sunday afternoon.
