Padres Trim Spring Training Roster

13 players sent to Minor League camp

After adding relief pitcher Adam Warren last week the Padres had 72 players at Major League Spring Training. They only have 70 lockers inside their clubhouse at the Peoria Sports Complex so things were getting more than a little bit crowded.

They alleviated some pressure on Monday by sending 13 players to Minor League camp. Here’s the full list:

OF Alex Dickerson
OF Buddy Reed
OF Boog Powell
OF Jacob Scavuzzo
INF Seth Mejias-Brean
INF Esteban Quiroz
1B Allen Craig
RHP T.J. Weir
RHP David Bednar
LHP Ryan Bollinger
LHP Eric Stout
LHP Jerry Keel
LHP Kyle McGrath

The only mild surprise on that list would be Buddy Reed, the team’s 17th-ranked prospect. But Reed might simply need a break. Starting last winter he played in Australia, then went to Spring Training, then played a full season between Lake Elsinore and San Antonio that included a trip to the Futures Game during MLB All-Star Week, then played in the Arizona Fall League, then got a few weeks off before going back to Spring Training.

Alex Dickerson is a Poway native who showed promise for the Padres in 2016 but lost the last full two seasons with back and elbow injuries. He was not expected to be in the mix for an Opening Day spot but the Friars would like to see if he can come back healthy and add depth to the organization.
