Padres Seal Series with Win over Marlins

Christian Villanueva Hits 15th Homer of the Season

What a way to a close out a series. The San Diego Padres are hitting their stride at Petco Park. The Friars notched their third victory in a row 8-3 on Thursday night to seal the series against the Miami Marlins.

The offense got on track early with a towering home run by Christian Villanueva in the first inning. The Friars rookie launched his 15th homer of the season, a two-run jack straight to the Western Metal Supply Building in left field and gave the Padres an early 2-0 lead. Villanueva has the second-most home runs in the National League behind Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals. The 26-year-old also leads all rookies in home runs with 15 and RBI with 35.

Eric Hosmer did his part in the second inning with a two-run RBI single that added to San Diego’s advantage 4-2. Hosmer is riding a four-game hitting streak. In his last 19 games the Padres first baseman has collected 12 RBI, six doubles, and a home run.

The Padres roll right into the next set of this 10 game homestand. The Cincinnati Reds visit Petco Park for the first of three games on Friday June 1 at 7:10 p.m.
