Padres Plan to Aid Tsunami Victims

Team Will Raise Funds During the Season

The Padres announced Friday they are organizing efforts to raise money to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan.

β€œAt a time like this we feel that it is important for the global community to become involved and support the people of Japan,” said Padres President/Chief Operating Officer Tom Garfinkel. β€œOur thoughts and prayers go out to the individuals and families affected by the devastation and we pledge to help support the relief efforts as Japan begins to rebuild.”

The Padres will raise funds as part of their Japanese Heritage Night scheduled for Friday, May 20 against the Seattle Mariners. The club will also match donations via the Padres Foundation. More details about this effort will be announced in the future.

In 2010 there were 14 Japanese-born players in Major League Baseball, including Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki. As of 6:00 p.m. San Diego time on Friday, several of those players had still not been able to reach family members living in Japan.
