Padres Coaching Staff Taking Shape

New manager Jayce Tingler starts adding pieces to his bench

The Padres have a new manager. Now Jayce Tingler is putting together his coaching staff.

The 38-year-old who's about to start his first managerial stint above rookie ball is adding a couple of guys who are a little longer in the tooth and already have a relationship with San Diego's most expensive superstar.

Phillies infield coach Bobby Dickerson is coming over to be the Padres new bench coach. Dickerson has been coaching professionally since 1993 and spent several years in Baltimore with 3rd baseman Manny Machado. Dickerson is regarded as one of the best infield coaches in the game and he has a boatload of talent to work with in San Diego with Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Eric Hosmer and Luis Urias (assuming Urias is not traded for a frontline starting pitcher but that's a conversation for a different day).

Orioles 1st base coach Wayne Kirby is also joining the Padres staff. Kirby also worked well with Machado and also has a history with both Tingler and Padres general manager A.J. Preller. All of them were with the Rangers for a few years when Kirby was the Texas outfield and baserunning coordinator.

Interestingly one of the players Kirby is closest to is Morse High School alum Adam Jones. The two even teamed up in a BBQ competition against some Orioles fans (apparently Wayne does some fantastic Greek style ribs).

Now, what does this mean for the other coaches on the Padres staff? Current 1st base coach Skip Schumaker is reportedly staying with the organization in an as-of-yet undefined role.

The jury is still out for bench coach Rod Barajas, who served as the interim manager after Andy Green was fired and interviewed for the full time position, 3rd base coach Glenn Hoffman, pitching coach Darren Balsley, hitting coach Johnny Washington, infield coach Damion Easley and bullpen coach Doug Bochtler.
