Padres Beat Diamondbacks in Series Opener

Austin Hedges Hits First Home Run since Return

Sometimes all it takes is a spark, and Thursday night the Padres got the jump start they needed on the way to a 6-3 victory over one of the top teams in the National League West, the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Austin Hedges recently rejoined the Friars after a lengthy rehab assignment. The Padres catcher provided some offense in the fifth inning with a solo homer to left field. Hedges’ third home run of the season (and his first since April 10th) gave the Padres a 2-1 lead.

Wil Myers did his part with a triple and single which drove in two runs in this contest. His RBI triple to center field in the sixth inning plated Carlos Asuaje and added to the lead 3-1. Asuaje had a solid night as well; the infielder reached based four times on a RBI single, a triple and two walks.

The Padres still have a lot of work to do. Andy Green’s squad has won just four of their last 17 games. The Friars will play the second of four games against the Diamondbacks on Friday July 6 at 6:40 p.m. PST at Chase Field.
