Excavation Mishap Causes Gas Leak in Otay Mesa

A crew working on Otay Mesa Road broke a pipe, breaking a 4-inch gas line Tuesday

A mishap by excavation crews working at an Otay Mesa site caused a gas leak Tuesday morning, officials confirmed.

Just before 9:10 a.m., excavation crews in the 5100 block of Otay Mesa Road accidentally broke a pipe, rupturing a 4-inch gas line.

When officials with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) arrived at the site, they discovered the broken pipe emitting gas.

Crews worked to repair the leak while officers with the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) helped with traffic control in the area, as some streets were temporarily blocked off.

By 9:45 a.m., officials said the situation was under control and the scene was being cleared.
