O'side Capt.'s Son Due in Court

Reginald Grigsby Junior, the son of an Oceanside police captain, is in jail facing charges of attempted murder for allegedly attacking his mother

The son of an Oceanside police captain is expected to appear in court Thursday. Heโ€™s facing charges of attempted murder for an alleged attack on his mother -- during which his father shot him.

Former standout San Diego State University football player Reginald Grigsby Jr., 25, was arrested Saturday at an Escondido hospital, where he was taken for treatment after the shooting, Lt. Dennis Brugos said. He's being held without bail at the Vista jail.

Grigsby came to the coupleโ€™s Fallbrook home just after midnight on Saturday. He got into an argument with his mother, Desirah Grigsby, and then turned violent, Lt. Brugos said.

โ€œThe father came to the aid of his wife, however, he was unable to stop the attack,โ€ he said.

Investigators say thatโ€™s when Capt. Reginald Grigsby allegedly shot his son and then called the Sheriff's Department to report the shooting.

News of the shooting came as a surprise to neighbors who say they didn't hear any gunshots.  In fact they only learned of the incident after investigators came knocking on their door early Saturday morning.

Grigsby Jr. was taken to Palomar Medical Center. His mother was taken to Fallbrook Hospital  -- she was later released. Investigators say the younger Grigsby has a history of mental problems.

According to the sheriff's website, Grigsby was booked into the Vista Detention facility Monday afternoon.

Oceanside police say the elder Grigsby remains on paid administrative leave while the department investigates the incident.
