One driver was killed Friday night in a head-on crash in Escondido, police confirmed.
Just before 9:40 p.m., a driver in a Saturn was traveling eastbound on El Norte Parkway when, for unknown reasons, the driver lost control and crossed into westbound lanes, the Escondido Police Department (EPD) said.
At the same time, a woman was driving a Toyota westbound on El Norte Parkway; the cars collided head-on just west of the Ash Street intersection.
The impact trapped the driver of the Saturn inside the car. That person died at the scene. The woman in the Toyota and her passenger were taken to Palomar Hospital with minor injuries and were soon released.
A traffic alert was issued in the area for at least four hours following the deadly collision.
The investigation is ongoing. At this time, the EPD does not think drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash, but speed may have been a factor. The name of the driver who died has not yet been released.
