PD Evacuates Oceanside Senior Community for Gas Line Leak

Most of the residents of Oceana, an over-55 community in Oceanside, were back in their homes Monday, but not before a wild night.

There was still a gaping hole in the wall of one duplex after a car slammed into the building, shearing off the main gas meter, according to the Oceanside Fire Department.

Police say an 85-year-old driver plowed into the building on North Vista Campana at 7 p.m., missing his own garage next door.

Police officers began to evacuate all 30 units in the immediate area, fire officials said. A shelter was set up in the community room of a nearby church.

San Diego Gas & Electric crews were called to repair the sheared gas line. The gas line was shut off at 9:52 p.m.

There were two homes declared inhabitable.

No one was seriously injured, and there was no serious structural damage.

The driver was treated for non-life threatening injuries, Oceanside police said. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
