2 DUI Suspects Arrested in Bus Crash

Two people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Oceanside Friday night after three vehicles struck a North County transit bus.

The collision happened just before 10 p.m. at State Route 76 and Airport Road. At least four people were injured in the crash. Three were transported by ambulance to local hospitals while another was airlifted from the scene, authorities said.

According to Oceanside police, the incident was a chain reaction-type crash.

One vehicle struck the transit bus first. Then, two more cars crashed into that first vehicle. At one point, police said a man got out of one of the vehicles and was struck by a passing car.

Police said there were no passengers on the bus, only the driver, as the transit bus was out of service at the time of the collision.

Police believe alcohol played a factor in the incident.

The driver who initially struck the bus was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Another driver involved in the subsequent chain reaction was also arrested on suspicion of driving drunk.

Police said it does not appear the DUI suspects knew each other or were in any way connected.

The victim airlifted from the scene sustained serious injuries but was expected to survive, police said. It is unclear which vehicle that victim was in at the time of the incident.

The others in the crash all suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation and no further details have been released.
