No Interruption in Valley Center Fire Service

Valley Center Fire Officials said there will be no change to fire service with the departure of CAL Fire from two stations in the area.

The Valley Center Fire Protection District made the statement after it announced that it would not renew it's contract with CAL FIRE to staff Station 72 on Lilac Rd. and Station 73 on Lake Wohlford Rd.

District Administrator John Byrne said officials considered signing a new contract with CAL FIRE to staff the stations but would be too expensive.

"Adopting a new CAL FIRE contract would lead to a deficit in the operating budget and a financial crisis," said Byrne.

San Pasqual Band of Mission Indian's Fire Department will staff the two stations after CAL FIRE's contract ends on August 31, 2013.

Byrne said the tribal fire department already responds to 60% of the emergency calls in the area.

Byrne and San Pasqual Tribal Leaders say there will be no difference in coverage and response times will not change.

CAL FIRE will continue to fulfill its mandate to attack wildfires in the county.
