New Footbridge Opens to Public

For those traveling by foot between the U.S. and Mexico at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the trek will take a new path starting on Friday.

A new pedestrian bridge opened at noon on Friday. The new 806-foot bridge spans Interstate 5 and connects the transit plaza on San Ysidro Boulevard and Caminones Way.

Construction on the bridge started in 2008. The $577 million project was overseen by the U.S. General Services Administration and is part of a project to expand the port of entry.

The project also includes an increase of northbound lanes into U.S. from 24 to 34 and an increase of southbound lanes from six to 12.

The three-phase project is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
