New Bill Targets Recalled Rental Cars

California would be the first state to require car rental companies to pull vehicles out of service when they receive notice of a safety recall, under a bill making its way through the Legislature.

Representatives of several rental companies testified Tuesday that the bill, AB753, unfairly targets them. They argued that the matter should be handled at the federal level so they do not have to deal with a patchwork of rules.

The association representing the industry said the bill, if signed into law, would set the first such rules in the nation. The measure was approved 6-2 by a legislative committee.
