Swabbies' Spa: Navy Goes Deluxe

New housing going up at Naval Base San Diego is set to give sailors a sort of spa treatment between tough stints at sea.

And the $322 million high-rise housing project known as Pacific Beacon resembles a resort hotel.

The four 18-story towers being erected on the base's former golf course feature private rooms with bay-front views, fitness rooms, and rooftop swimming pools.

Navy officials said the project is intended to boost reenlistment rates, offset the difficulties of long deployments and entice sailors to live on the base rather than in outside apartments.

The Navy is working on similar projects in Jacksonville, Fla. and Norfolk, Va.

Each unit will house two single, same-sex sailors, who will be asked to sign six-month leases at rates that are set below the monthly Navy housing allowance.
