Musical Fireworks

So who's gonna pop off this month on the music scene? FM 94/9's Tim Pyles weigh in on his picks.

Happy Independence! Celebrate yours by supporting a local or touring band! So many choices and so many places to go! We have some new venues to support these days, from the Tin Roof downtown to the North Park Theater. So, my friends, go see a show, and I will see you there!

July 2: The Gothfather of Bauhaus, Peter Murphy, plays the Belly Up.

July 3: Ronnie Spector from the Ronettes performs and tells stories about her career at the North Park Theater.

July 4: Fireworks!!!

July 5: The Creepy Creeps, the Schitzophonics, Love Hungry Men at the Casbah. This is the Avalon Tattoo 25th Anniversary Party -- congrats!

July 6: Kiss and Def Leppard at the Sleep Train Amphitheater. Forty years of Kiss; the first show I ever saw as a young rocker!

July 7: Take a night off -- you earned it after that weekend...

July 8: If you are a fan of the films "Caddyshack," "Footloose" or "Top Gun," then this man is a must-see at the Belly Up -- Kenny Loggins is still the man!

July 9: Ted Nugent at the Ramona Mainstage!  Regardless of your thoughts on this man, "Stranglehold" and "Cat Scratch Fever" are still some great songs!

July 10: An evening with Ilya at Maryjane’s Underground. Free show and free 619 Vodka from 8-9 p.m. with RSVP

July 11: Cloud Nothings and the Wytches destroy the Soda Bar. Cloud Nothings has been working with locally bred Wavves lately. The Wytches are from the UK and play psych surf rock.

July 12: The annual Switchfoot Bro-Am at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Support a good cause and see Switchfoot.

July 13: Detroit's Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas play the Soda Bar with locals Javier Escovedo and Rebecca Jade & the Cold Fact. Jessica call her music dark soul or gothic pop.

July 14: Octa#grape, Oh Spirit! and Big Bad Buffalo at the Casbah. Big Bad Buffalo is a local band of young musicians from the School of Rock, and this will be their return show after their first tour.  Welcome them home!

July 15: Goatwhore, Lord Howler and Eukaryst at the Soda Bar. Blackened death metal -- bring the kids!

July 16: The Antlers at the Belly Up. This indie folk-rock band based in Brooklyn make the long journey to the other side of the country, and you won't have that far to go see them, so go.

July 17: The Chain Gang of 1974 and Empires at Club 207 inside the Hard Rock Hotel. It's an indie dance-music party, so wear those special shoes you like.

July 18: Jurassic 5 at the Del Mar Racetrack. These guys have always kept the true spirit of hip-hop alive!

July 19: The Summerland Tour hits Harrah’s Rincon Casino with '90s alt legends Everclear, Soul Asylum, Eve 6 and Spacehog. All I really want to see is Spacehog.

July 20: Jewel returns home to play Humphrey’s By the Bay and not have to sleep in a van.

July 21: Nightmare and the Cat, and Kristeen Young play the Casbah. Kristeen reportedly got Morrissey sick on tour recently.

July 22: The indie rock band the Crookes from the UK play upstairs at the House of Blues.

July 23: Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff plays the Belly Up. Rule No. 1: Always go to see the legends play live!

July 24: Comic-Con begins, and MTV is throwing a huge party with Linkin Park at Petco Park.  Comic-Con badges only.

July 25: Kirk Von Hammet presents the thrash-metal band Exodus at F6IX downtown, and he plays with them. This is also a Comic-Con related event.

July 26: A garage-rock pop-punk show with the Muffs, the Loons, Aquadolls and the Touchies at the Casbah. On July 29, the Muffs' will release their first album in a decade -- whoop-dee-doo!

July 27: Municipal Waste at the Casbah -- the thrash metal legends!

July 28: Au Revoir Simone are a dream-pop band from Brooklyn, and Haerts is also from Brooklyn, and both will be at the Casbah. Being from Brooklyn makes you cool ...

July 29: Foxy Shazam at the Belly Up. Foxy is many things, but to me it's just good, old fashioned glam rock.

July 30: Motley Crue, Alice Cooper and the Raskins at the Sleep Train Amphitheater. Could be your last chance to see Motley Crue -- they say it's the last tour! For that matter, who knows if and when Alice Cooper will tour again? School's out for summer!

July 31: The Hold Steady at the Belly Up. Heartland rock band that takes many cues from Bruce Springsteen.

July is always so busy in San Diego, mainly due to the behemoth that is Comic-Con, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled to what is going on in America's Finest City.
