A military vehicle crashed Sunday morning near Camp Pendleton, injuring two Marines and halting traffic on a busy stretch of San Diego County freeway.
The accident happened just before 10 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5 near the Aliso Creek rest area, just south of Las Pulgas and about six miles north of Oceanside.
The military vehicle struck the back of a big rig and lost control. The vehicle crossed all four lanes of traffic before ramming into the freeway divider, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP issued a Sig Alert. All lanes of I-5 South in the area were closed around 10:30 a.m. so a medical helicopter could land on the freeway. The passenger was flown to Scripps La Jolla with major injuries, CHP said.
The driver suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the same hospital by ambulance. Both injured Marines are men in their 20s, CHP said. The driver of the tractor trailer wasn’t hurt.
Around 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Caltrans announced all lanes had reopened.
CHP is investigating the cause of the crash. Officers don't believe alcohol or drugs were involved.
