Man Accused of Trying to Grab Teenage Jogger in San Marcos

The encounter happened between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on April 6 at the trail head on Melrose Drive near San Elijo Road in San Marcos

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSO) released a sketch Tuesday of a man who allegedly tried to grab a 13-year-old boy while he was jogging in San Marcos.

The SDSO said the encounter happened on April 6 between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. near the trail head on Melrose Drive and San Elijo Road.

Investigators said an unknown man – described as a heavyset black male, 6-foot-3 or taller -- approached a boy who was jogging in the area and tried to grab him.

The teen escaped unharmed.

The suspect fled the scene and is now wanted on suspicion of annoying a child. Investigators said the man was described as having short, 3-inch dreadlocks. The tips of his dreadlocks were dyed a different color. The hairstyle was described to investigators as being similar to the style worn by NFL player Odell Beckham Jr.

The suspect also had hair on the side of his face – but not a mustache, beard or goatee, the SDSO said. He wore a white T-shirt, camouflage shorts, white ankle-high socks and gray tennis shoes. He wore solid, black, gauge-style earrings about half the size of a dime in his ears. He also had a tattoo on his left forearm.

Investigators said the suspect may have been driving a 2004 white Chevy pickup truck with a white camper shell.

Anyone who recognizes the man in the sketch can contact the SDSO at (858) 565-5555 and refer to the case number, 16117667.
