ME: Ejected Toddler ‘Partially Restrained'

A two-year-old boy who died after two cars collided on the Imperial Avenue off-ramp from Interstate 805 has been identified.

Jose Penaloza was killed Wednesday morning when a 60-year-old Bonita woman driving a BMW lost control, veered to the right and collided with a Chevrolet Silverado truck, the Medical Examiner's office reported.

Both vehicles careened onto an embankment and overturned.

The two-year-old riding in a car seat in the Chevrolet Silverado was ejected onto the roadway and suffered massive head trauma.

“He was a partially restrained rear passenger,” the Medical Examiner’s report said.

The boy was taken to Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead minutes after arrival.

“The car seat placement and means of securement of the seat and child are under investigation,” Officer Brad Baehr said.

The 36-year-old driver of the Silverado truck suffered minor injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital.  The driver of the BMW was not injured.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
