Marine Recruit Dies at MCRD

The recruit has been identified as Darnell McCowan, 22, of Sacramento

The U.S. Marines has released new details in the death of a Marine recruit at a San Diego training base.

Darnell McCowan, 22, of Sacramento, had just completed the run portion of the initial strength test at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot when he collapsed Friday.

McCowan was rushed to Scripps Mercy Hospital Friday and was pronounced dead just before 10 a.m.

McCowan, a former specialist in the Army Reserves, had arrived in San Diego on June 19.

Results of the test would determine if he was physically capable to begin recruit training.

The initial strength test, or IST, includes a 1.5 mile run, and the completion of a minimum of three pull-ups and 44 crunches.

Cause of death has not been determined.
