Man and Woman Rob Chula Vista Target at Gunpoint

A man accused of waving a gun at employees and shoppers inside a busy Target store was on the loose early Tuesday, Chula Vista Police (CVPD) said.

An armed robbery happened at 7:33 p.m. at the Target located at the corner of Broadway and Palomar Street, east of Interstate 5.

According to CVPD, a man and a woman were attempting to shoplift but were approached by security. That's when the man pulled out a gun, sending shoppers diving for cover.

Both suspects ran off on foot.

CVPD officers immediately pursued, telling residents of the nearby Sunset Villa Apartments to shelter in place while they searched house to house.

The woman was taken into custody.

Investigators say they recovered several stolen items but their main concern was public safety.

β€œMaking sure everybody is safe out here. We're currently trying to locate the subject based on the female half we have in custody now,” CVPD Sgt. Jeff Hobson said.

Police say the man was described as in his 20s, about 5 feet 4 inches wearing a white jacket, blue jeans and carrying a black backpack.

The suspect was considered to be armed and dangerous. If seen, police say to not engage and contact them immediately.

No other information was immediately available.
