Man Shot Driver Who Offered Him Ride: Deputies

A man suspected of shooting another man who gave him a ride from Temecula to Valley Center has been arrested, San Diego County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies said the victim had met the suspect in Temecula early Monday morning and gave him a ride to Valley Center. That’s where the suspect ordered the man to pull off the road, where he displayed a handgun.

As the man ran away, the suspect shot him in the leg and drove off in his vehicle, deputies said.

Deputies on Thursday afternoon spotted a suspicious vehicle entering the Pauma Indian Reservation; they found suspect Ryan S. Ballew, 23, hiding in the backseat.

He was booked in the Vista Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and carjacking.

The victim’s condition on Thursday wasn’t immediately known.
