Man Sentenced in Fatal Pedestrian Crash

A man who pleaded guilty to fatally hitting and killing a pedestrian in Lakeside was sentenced to 6 years in state prison, the San Diego County District Attorney announced. 

 Joel Joseph Silva, 33, of Julian fatally struck 34-year-old Kimberly Eakin as she walked along Woodside Avenue in Lakeside November 29, 2015. 

Several days later, Silva pleaded guilty to one count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and one count of driving under the influence of drugs causing great bodily injury.

At the time of the crash, authorities say they found at least five bottles of prescription drugs in the car. Silva was arrested after officials administered field sobriety tests.

Silva told authorities he fell asleep at the wheel and woke up after the accident.
