Man Attempted to Light Female on Fire at Fiesta Island: SDPD

A man was taken into custody at Fiesta Island Monday after he poured gasoline on a female acquaintance and tried to set her on fire, police said.

The man first poured gasoline on himself before grabbing the 46-year-old woman's wrist and dousing her in gas as well, San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Officer John Buttle said.

The woman was able to break free and run from the 45-year-old man just after 4 p.m. Buttle said the two don't have a relationship but they were acquaintances.

SDPD searched the island for the suspect by land and air and even deployed spike strips at the island's exit in case the suspect tried to flee.

Officers were seen searching an RV on the island but did not find the suspect.

About an hour later, the man was seen walking on the island and was arrested without incident, SDPD said.

He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and could be facing attempted murder charges, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said.

The victim was not transported to the hospital and there were no significant injuries, Buttle said.
