Local School Officials Charged With Misusing Funds

Two former university professors and a former Imperial County schools superintendant have been indicted for allegedly misusing federal funds intended for elementary school math and science programs.

Michael Klentschy, Olga Amaral and Leslie Garrison have been charged with conspiracy, fraud and theft, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

Klentschy is the former superintendent of the El Centro Elementary School District. Amaral and Garrison are former professors at the Imperial Valley campus of San Diego State University.

Prosecutors say the three diverted funds from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education for their own use and benefit.

Klentschy also was indicted for seeking duplicate travel reimbursements and falsifying standardized test data to obtain grant money.

The three are set to appear in court Jan. 14.
