Local Martial Arts Team to Compete in World Championships

The group will compete against elite teams from over 100 countries

Punching, kicking, spinning and flipping, a team from Freestyle Marital Arts in Point Loma is headed for their greatest battle yet.

The team, ten kids ranging in age from 11 to 17, is preparing for the U.S. Open ISKA World Championships at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

The team will present a choreographed program mixing traditional marital arts with acrobatics and artistry.

The group has been preparing for years to qualify for the elite tournament where they will compete against teams from over 100 countries.

“You really get an adrenaline rush. It's so exciting especially with a team with your friends doing what you love,” martial artist Casey Hall-Landers told NBC 7.

“You're on that top tier of one percent of competitors, and they’re going to be seeing lots of cool tricks, lots of cool forms and be able to pursue their martial arts in an aggressive way in competition,” coach Taylor Clark said.

The 43rd Annual U.S. Open ISKA World Martial Arts Championships are scheduled for July 8 and 9, 2016.

The competition will be broadcast live on ESPN3 Saturday, July 9 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. EDT.
