Lamont Smith Hired as USD Basketball Coach

The University of San Diego will name former player Lamont Smith as its new men’s basketball coach.

He will be introduced in a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

Smith replaces Bill Grier, who was fired after a disappointing 15-16 season. He played for the Toreros from 1994-99, starting all 27 games for an 18-win team in his senior season.

He comes from the New Mexico program, where he spent the past two seasons as the Associate Head Coach under Craig Neal.

Smith becomes the program’s 12th head coach and just the fifth since USD moved to Division I in 1979.
