La Jolla Playhouse's Rounds Out 2019-2020 Season With New Piece From ‘Hamilton' Artists, World-Premiere Piece

Two additional productions -- a world-premiere piece and a new musical from some of the collaborators involved in 'Hamilton' -- will round out the season next year, the Playhouse says.

A world-premiere play and a new musical from several of the artists beyond "Hamilton" will round out La Jolla Playhouse's 2019-2020 season, the theater has announced.

Audiences will get the chance to see the new musical "Fly," based on the novel Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, with book by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph (Playhouse’s Guards at the Taj, Broadway’s Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo) and the Playhouse-commissioned world-premiere "The Coast Starlight" by Keith Bunin in the coming season.

The new musical "Fly" has music and lyrics by Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award winner Bill Sherman, who did the orchestrations for Lin Manuel-Miranda's "In The Heights." Jeffrey Seller, the producer for "Hamilton," "Avenue Q" and "In The Heights," will direct the musical.

The Playhouse-commissioned play "The Coast Starlight" will be directed by Tyne Rafaeli (Off-Broadway’s Usual Girls). The piece was developed during the Playhouse's 2018 DNA New Work series.

"Fly" will run from Feb. 18 to March 29, 2019 and "The Coast Starlight" will run from Aug. 20 to Sept. 15, 2019.

The two productions round out a robust 2019-2020 season at the Playhouse, including a new musical with a book by John Leguizamo, fresh off his Tony Award win.

“The 2019/2020 season showcases four riveting new pieces that represent a multitude of vibrant and vigorous voices, all of which examine – in vastly different ways – how ordinary people attempt to persevere under extraordinary circumstances,” said Artistic Director Christopher Ashley in a statement.

The season also includes the world-premiere piece "Put Your House in Order," by Ike Holter, the world-premiere play "The Luckiest" by Melisa Ross, Leguizamo's new satire musical, "Kiss My Aztec!" and "Cambodian Rock Band," a rock concert play by Lauren Lee.
