It’s Lobster Season

It's that time of year again

Saturday marks the first day of lobster season, which gives lifeguards a few extra emergencies to respond to.

Lifeguards have already helped one lobster diver near the La Jolla Children’s Pool swim to shore and towed a fishing boat that lost power outside the surf.

According to San Diego Fire-Rescue officials, no one has been injured or arrested for illegal fishing so far, which could have something to do with the high surf that kept many divers on land Friday night.

Before trying to catch a spiny crustacean, yourself, note that not everyone is allowed to catch them.  Requirements needed to catch lobster are: a California fishing license, catching them only with bare or gloved hands, carrying a gauge for measuring them and catching only seven.

Commercial fishermen will be allowed to go “hunting” after lobster next week.
