Feds OK Pedestrian Bridge to Tijuana Airport

The White House has OK'd building a bridge to the Tijuana airport.

Federal officials are calling the pedestrian bridge to the Rodriguez International Airport an "innovative U.S.-Mexico border crossing." A press release issued by the White House on Wednesday said that "under Executive Order 11423, as amended, the Secretary of State may issue presidential permits for international border crossings after finding that they would be in the 'national interest.' "

Various news outlets reported this week that billionaire Sam Zell was involved in the investment group seeking to fund construction of the border crossing.

Wednesday's development was welcomed by San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders.

"This presidential permit for this key addition to our region's border infrastructure is great news for San Diego," Sanders said. "This project will facilitate safe and secure travel for San Diegans and visitors, which is good for the economies of both San Diego and Baja California."

The bridge's construction may be welcomed by travelers because of the lower costs of flights available across the border in Mexico.

As proposed, the bridge would link a passenger facility in San Diego initially equipped with facilities for customs inspection, parking and ground transportation. Officials hope that the new border crossing would ease congestion at Lindbergh Field and at the the other Ports of Entry in the region.
