Multiple lanes on Interstate 8 near San Diego’s College Area were reopened to traffic until Friday afternoon after a large sinkhole opened Thursday on the shoulder off the busy freeway.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers and crews from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) were called just after 10 a.m. to eastbound I-8 between Waring Road and the College Avenue exit leading to San Diego State University.
CHP officials said a large sinkhole had formed on the right shoulder, just off the freeway. Caltrans officials say its dimensions are 30 feet long, 20 feet wide and 20 feet deep.
CHP officials shut down traffic in the three righthand lanes, just west of College Avenue, and issued a SigAlert for the area beginning around 11:20 a.m.
Caltrans crews could be seen assessing the sinkhole and preparing to repair the street. Officials closed two of five lanes while they repaired the area. The lanes were reopened as of Friday morning's commute.
No injuries or accidents have been reported in connection with the sinkhole.
Throughout Thursday, traffic was slow on the freeway from Waring Road and was also backed up from before Interstate 15. CHP officers remained on scene to help with traffic control.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area and take alternate routes.

San Diego MTS offered overnight parking at Qualcomm Stadium for trolley riders who want to avoid traffic caused by the sinkhole. The Green Line runs by Qualcomm and has connections to other lines in La Mesa, El Cajon and downtown San Diego.
Trains leave every 15 minutes. Officials say you should use the Friars Road exit to reach the stadium and park on the south side near the trolley stop. The stadium is closed to all vehicle traffic between 1 to 4 a.m.
