Speeding Driver Exiting I-15 Hits Sedan, Killing Passenger: EPD

At least one person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on an HOV lane ramp along Interstate 15 in Escondido.

The Escondido Police Department said that the crash occurred near the southbound HOV off-ramp at Del Lago Boulevard and Beethoven Drive around 3:30 p.m.

A black Jaguar XK6 exiting the freeway ran a red light and, at or near freeway speeds, broadsided a white Toyota Avalon headed westbound on Del Lago, EPD said.

A female front-seat passenger in the Avalon, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, according to EPD, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased woman's brother-in-law, Jose Quintero, told NBC 7 she was on her way to pick up her husband of 45 years from a bus station.

"That gets me mad," Quintero said. "That's not fair to be on the road that way."

The driver, a 42-year-old man, suffered minor injuries.

The 81-year-old male driver of the Jaguar was also unrestrained and was taken to the hospital in critical condition with major injuries. A 51-year-old female passenger in the Jaguar suffered serious injuries.

All patients were taken to Palomar Medical Center for treatment.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, EPD said.

Anyone who may have witnessed this crash can contact EPD Officer Frank Huston at (760) 839-4423.
