Huge Explosion Rocks Business, Two Killed

Two employees were killed and a third was injured in an explosion that rocked a plastic components manufacturing site in Rancho Santa Margarita, an Orange County Fire Authority captain said.

The authority's dispatch center received a 911 call concerning the explosion at Solus Industrial Innovators at 30062 Aventura Ave. at 11:38 p.m. Thursday, Capt. Greg McKeown said.

"Two people were found dead at the scene," McKeown said. "We transported a third person to the hospital for treatment and three others refused treatment," he said. "All six people were employees."

McKeown said the blast damaged the building's structure, particularly its facade.

"The back wall of the building also bulged out from the force of the blast," he said.

McKeown said the blast activated water-based fire extinguishers inside the building that put out fires sparked by the explosion.

"There is no fire at the scene," McKeown said early Friday morning.

The incident was classified as a second-alarm emergency, McKeown said. He said authorities did not immediately determine what triggered the explore or establish monetary losses. An investigation was under way.
