The U.S. Honor Flag arrived in San Diego Thursday afternoon to pay tribute to Officer Jeremy Henwood, who was killed in the line of duty on Aug. 7.
The flag will be displayed beside Henwood’s casket at his memorial service – a rare but deserved honor, police said.
The service will be held Friday, 10 a.m. at The Rock Church in Point Loma, 2277 Rosecrans Street. A police motorcade will start at Qualcomm Stadium before the funeral leading hundreds of officers to the funeral at The Rock Church.
The flag arrived on American Airlines flight 1629 at the San Diego International Airport at about noon. Water canons formed an arch of water while the plane was taxied into the terminal.
The captain then handed the flag to a member of the San Diego Police Honor Guard while a bagpiper played.
Honor Guard members escorted the flag through the terminal to an awaiting police car, which will bring the flag to Friday’s service.
The flag has paid tribute to fallen heroes who died in the line of duty, making appearances at locations such as the Capitol, Ground Zero and the Pentagon. It recently returned from Atlantis STS-135, where it honored fallen heroes of the American space program.
“I think it’s a real shinning star for San Diego that our police personnel are being honored when there are so many law enforcement officers who may have passed away this week,” said Tom Chase, who was in the airport during the ceremony.

Agencies assisting The Honor Network and San Diego Police Department in escorting Officer Henwood include the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Police Department, the Texas State Troopers and the San Antonio Police Department.
