A FedEx truck driver lost control of his truck as a car tried to pass him on State Route 905 in Otay Mesa, sending the truck crashing through a metal bridge railing and onto the road below.
The driver, a 55-year-old man from Chula Vista, was instantly killed in the crash, California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said.
The crash happened at approximately 2:30 p.m. Tuesday on westbound SR-905, east of Picador Boulevard when a 30-year-old woman behind the wheel of a 2013 Hyundai Elantra was driving with four small children and an adult man in her car.
For reasons still under investigation, the woman tried to overtake the FedEx big rig on the right. The maneuver caused both the woman and the FedEx driver to lose control of their vehicles.
The 55-year-old man veered to the left and drove through a metal bridge railing, flying off the bridge and landing on Picador Boulevard below. The road runs directly under the state route.
The woman, her male passenger and four small children struck the bridge railing and came to a rest in the freeway lane. None of the occupants were hurt.
Alcohol or drugs are not suspected.
The crash remains under investigation.
