2 San Diego Gymboree Stores Among 350 Closing Nationwide

Before this announcement, there were nine Gymboree stores operating in San Diego County

Children's clothing seller Gymboree Corp. is closing 350 stores, including two in San Diego County, as it works to restructure in bankruptcy, the company announced this week.

The local stores that will be closing are the Gymboree at The Shoppes at Carlsbad (2525 El Camino Real, Suite #131), and the Gymboree at Parkway Plaza (415 Parkway Plaza) mall in El Cajon.

For now, seven other Gymboree stores at these shopping centers in San Diego County remain open: Horton Plaza; Fashion Valley; Westfield UTC; Plaza Bonita; North County Fair; The Gateway Shops at Las Americas; Carlsbad Premium Outlets.

The San Francisco-based company said its mass closures include mainly Gymboree and Crazy 8 stores. The company also operates Janie and Jack stores -- both brick-and-mortar locations and online.

The company will still operate more than 900 locations after the 350 stores are shut down.

Gymboree filed for bankruptcy protection in June.

Traditional retailers have been struggling to deal with stiff competition from online companies and slowing mall traffic.

According to a statement released by the company, affected stores will host closing sales beginning on July 18.
