New Gilman Bridge Connects UC San Diego Over Interstate 5

Students with UC San Diego will use the bridge as a second on-campus crossing over the busy highway.

Two years after construction began, pedestrians and vehicles are able to use the Gilman Drive Bridge connecting La Jolla and UC San Diego.

Officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday to celebrate the completion of the arch bridge that extends across Interstate 5. When construction began, the approximate cost was estimated at $20.6 million.

The bridge was built through a partnership between the San Diego Association of Governments, Caltrans, and the University of California, San Diego.

"This has always been a missing link to the heart of our community," said Project Manager for UC San Diego Christina Mannion.

"This is a key connector that is going to help us transform the campus for future construction projects as well."

Students with UC San Diego will use the bridge as a second on-campus crossing over the busy highway.

Construction began in 2016 and has required the closure of I-5.

Next steps in the Mid-Coast Trolley Expansion will be two other bridges to serve the trolley at Voigt and Nobel drives.
