Friend's Death: Tragic Bad Decision or Foul Play?

A man who police say confessed to accidentally shooting and killing his friend has been arrested after investigators said his story doesn’t quite add up.

The victim, 20-year-old Luis Urbina, was a Sailor stationed aboard USS Ronald Reagan, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. He was shot Wednesday inside a San Carlos apartment complex on Navajo Road.

The shooter, Clinton Echols, 25, told police he was showing his friend the gun when it fired.  Echols was questioned Wednesday and then released after police believed his story.

Thursday morning, it was a different story. Police say the investigation revealed that the shooter and victim were playing video games together when Echols pointed a handgun at Urbina.  The gun fired, hitting the victim.

“The suspect did not report the shooting immediately, and by the time he did, the victim was dead.  Based on these facts, and other inconsistencies, Clinton Echols was arrested for murder,” Lt. Bryan Pendleton said.

Echols has been booked into County Jail.
