Free Gardening Classes for SD Residents

Need a tutor for your green thumb? The county has opened five Regional Garden Education Center locations across the county.

The hope is to teach people how to grow green to help them lead healthier lives, by giving them access to fresh produce, county officials said.

The education centers will offer garden education, with classes on technique and management and on-going classes for gardeners of all levels, the county said in a release.

The garden centers will be located in National City, Encinitas, City Heights, Spring Valley and South San Diego. Any resident from San Diego County is eligible to enroll in the free classes at any of the five centers.

The Regional Garden Education Centers are a project of Healthy Works, an initiative promoting wellness. The funds for the gardens are from a federal grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
