The 21-year-old former Torrey Pines High School student accused of making violent threats towards the school last month did not show up to his scheduled arraignment Tuesday.
A judge issued a warrant for the arrest of Kevin Gregory Matlak, the man police say posted a threat to the school on Instagram that included a picture of a firearm and expressed a desire to end the lives of others at the school and himself.
Matlak’s defense attorney said that his client posted bail and voluntarily admitted himself into a psychiatric facility and was following doctor’s orders that he not attend the court session.
The arraignment went on without Matlak and prosecutors claimed he had a festering resentment toward the campus and staff. Three people from the school were named in the complaint, but prosecutors did not say what their connection to the school was.
Matlak’s attorney said that the three people were not directly threatened in any way, but saw the alleged post and became fearful.
The threat allegedly posted by Matlak the evening of May 30 led school officials to close the campus the next day. A senior awards night event and several athletic banquets were also canceled.
According to prosecutors, Matlak’s post seemed to suggest he was upset about not being able to walk at his 2015 graduation ceremony because he had a job and other responsibilities.

An investigation was launched by SDPD Northwestern Division and in coordination with school administration and district officials upon reports of the threat, police said.
SDPD took Matlak into custody without incident at around 1 p.m. in Point Loma on June 1. He was charged with one felony count of making criminal threats.
Matlak's attorney said he would show up to court Wednesday to be arraigned on the charges relating to the alleged threat, as well as charges stemming from a March incident where he was arrested for allegedly making false credit card purchases.
