The scarlet and black of San Diego State University is joining team red, white and blue.
Former Aztec Whitney Ashley qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro by winning the women’s discus throw at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track and Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Ashley, who’s been on two world championship teams, had the winning toss of 204 feet, 2 inches with her fifth toss to secure a spot on her first Olympic team. She’ll be joined by other first-timers Shelbi Vaughan and Kelsey Card.
She’s the 13th SDSU Track and Field Olympian and the first since 2004 when Marla Runyan made the U.S. Track and Field Team in the 5K.
With the Aztecs, Ashely won the 2012 NCAA outdoor national title in discus, was a two-time First-Team All-American and owns the school record for discus throw of 196 feet, 10 inches that she set in Des Moines, Iowa at the NCAA Championships.
You can catch Ashley and rest of Team U.S.A. on NBC 7 with the Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony August 5th. Women's discus starts August 15th and the final takes place the 16th.
