Flying Tire Strikes CHP Officer on I-15 in Mission Valley

A California Highway Patrol officer was injured by a tire that flew off a car in Mission Valley Thursday.

The officer was investigating a two-car crash on southbound Interstate 15 at Friars road when a passing Acura lost its wheel, which struck the officer at about 1:50 a.m., CHP said.

Other officers on the scene immediately gave the fallen officer first aid until paramedics arrived.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital with major injuries to his leg, CHP Officer Jake Sanchez said. His condition was not known but he was expected to survive.

Sanchez said as a CHP officer, hearing another officer is hurt is, "the worst thing you can ever hear on the radio."

He wanted to remind drivers to give officers and anyone else working on the side of the roadways extra space, to move over, and to slow down.

Sanchez said the victim is a 15-year veteran of the department.

The driver of the Acura stopped and is not facing any charges.
