Firefighter Injured in Spring Valley Recycling Center Fire Recovering Steadily

The fire burning at a recycling center threatened homes and prompted evacuations on August 2.

A firefighter injured in a recycling center fire in Spring Valley is steadily improving, according to Cal Fire officials.

Jon Gerstenberg was transported to the hospital with injuries to his shoulder and leg on August 2. He had been battling a fire burning at a paper recycling company located on Bancroft Drive, southeast of the State Route 125 and 94 interchange.

The fire was threatening several homes in the area and prompted evacuations.

Gerstenberg was transferred to the Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy Center at Sharp Memorial Hospital where he is recovering.

Cal Fire officials say pain management is the biggest challenge for the firefighter. He will also be participating in more than three hours of Physical Therapy every day.
