A small brush fire broke out Monday evening in Rancho Penasquitos, fire officials said.
The fire which broke out in McGonagal Canyon, directly west of Westview High School, was quickly contained.
San Diego firefighters reported the brush fire burning along Highway 56 and Camino del Sur in Rancho Penasquitos around 6:40 p.m. Firefighters contained the blaze to about one-quarter of an acre by 7 p.m.
The flames could be seen from the 56 freeway but after a water drop by Copter One and the work of several engine companies, all the remains are what look like tiny camp fires along the hillside.
One firefighter said while it was "going pretty good for while," it wasn't going anywhere since the canyon is "surrounded by concrete."
While there is thick smoke in the air and a light wind, all the homes around the area were deemed safe.
