A San Diego father killed in a rollover crash in Borrego Springs on Saturday was identified.
Raul Cadena, 49, was the front seat passenger of an SUV that was part of a caravan line of San Diego-based Boy Scout Troop 59. The troop was heading to Borrego Springs for a bicycling event.
According to Cal Fire and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials, the driver of the SUV lost control and slammed into a tree in a ditch in the northbound lane of State Route 79 near Santa Ysabel in unincorporated San Diego County.
Cadena was pulled from the vehicle but died on the scene from his injuries.
According to officials, Cadena’s son was in another vehicle in that caravan line but was unhurt.
Two Boy Scouts, both 13 years old, had been riding in the back of the SUV and were also injured. They were flown to Rady Children’s Hospital.
The driver of the SUV, a 52-year old man, and his wife, 42, were taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. They are also the parents of one of the teens injured in the crash.
Their conditions are unknown.
