A man was killed in a single-vehicle car crash in Del Mar Heights and his two teenaged children who were in the car were hospitalized.
A father was killed and his two teenage children were sent to the hospital, one with life-threatening injuries, after a car crashed on a rain-slicked road in Del Mar Friday morning.
The San Diego Police Department said the 50-year-old man was driving his black sedan down Del Mar Heights Road when it lost control on the wet roadway just before 8 a.m.
The car was traveling at a high rate of speed when swerved to the right and crashed into a tree, SDPD said. The force of the crash split the car into two.
The father did not survive the major injuries he received to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His two children, a 17-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter, were rushed to a local hospital, SDPD said.
While the daughter was expected to survive the minor injuries she sustained to her abdomen, the boy's injuries were considered life-threatening, SDPD said.
SDPD Sgt. Josh Odom said speed was a factor in the collision and urged other drivers to slow down.
"It’s very sad. I would really ask that people please slow down and be cautious. Because it’s very sad and tragic things can happen," Odom said. "Just please, please slow down. Please. Be careful. Be cautious."

Roads were wet from hours of heavy downpours. At the time of the crash, a flash flood advisory was in effect for the majority of San Diego County -- from the Mission Valley area north to Oceanside, according to NBC 7 Meteorologist Sheena Parveen.
Authorities urged motorists to avoid Carmel Canyon Road between Del Mar Heights Road and Carmel Knolls Road as they respond to the crash.
