Cyclist Dies After Crashing With Amtrak Train in Carlsbad

A cyclist was killed in an accidental collision with a train near the Carlsbad Village Station Thursday night, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department confirmed.

The man was on his bike going to meet his friends in Carlsbad Village when the collision happened at Grand Avenue and Washington Street before 7:30 p.m., Calsbad police Lt. Greg White said.

SDSO said the victim, described as a man in his late 40s, was hit by a southbound train traveling approximately 63 miles per hour near the Carlsbad Village Station.

The collision was accidental, deputies said.

The cyclist was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Carlsbad Village Drive and Grand Avenue were closed in both directions until about 10 p.m. as law enforcement officers investigated the scene.

Due to the incident, Coster 663 and 665 routes were halted at the Carlsbad Poinsettia station. North County's Breeze bus system took passengers northbound instead.

Amtrak trains haven't stopped at the Carlsbad Village Station Since October 2017 and instead drive through the transit stop.

The Carlsbad Police Department and Carlsbad Fire Department also responded to the scene.

No other information was available.
